Finding Work In The Australian Film, Television and Theatre Sectors
Finding work in the arts industry is quite hard for us Australians as we either have to know someone in the industry or stalk someone into giving us a job. From acting to being apart of the backstage crew, work is harder to find than a normal person at Supernova. So I have amassed a short list of websites that contain work for those who want to break into the industry.
ArtsHub
ArtsHub has a large number of jobs for a variety of industry’s such as, visual, performing, screen, design and publishing. Here is a specified list of jobs that are currently shown on their website:
- Screen writer.
- Hair and makeup.
- Illustration and animation.
- Administration and Management.
- Advertising/PR/Marketing.
- Curators.
- Digital/Post Production.
- Distribution/ Exhibition.
- Event Management.
- Fashion and Textile.
- Film/Television Production.
- Graphic.

The jobs published on this website are mainly paid work with a few internship and volunteer jobs available, many company’s use it such as the MTC, MCTV, LOGONTO, Victorian Opera, these are the people who you should work with.
Under education, there are education jobs, courses and training, educators, educations news, career advice.
In education news you can find a plethora of articles relating to career advice, features on whether you should switch degrees, to the latest news about how international scholarship will aid inclusion, opinions pieces on preventing overwork in the arts and analysis on how 95% of artists miss out on copyright payments.
Courses and training is also featured on their website for those out there who either want to get a taste for the industry they are thinking of going into, or for those who want to polish their skills and people who would like to learn a new skill.
Under, Educator profiles you can find information on art schools around you, these profiles provide an insight on what they strive to teach their young students.
Education jobs is for those who wish to teach the arts to pass on their vast knowledge to a younger generation, you find that anything you wish to teach can be found here.
There are so many great applications on ArtsHub I will let you find out the rest for yourself.
ArtsHub is the way to go for finding a job, for anyone in the arts field who, is looking for a good arts school, looking for grants, latest art news or has trouble finding a job through regular channels. Unfortunately a lot of these applications cannot be accessed unless you pay for a subscription.
Starnow
starnow is a very basic website, it has no bells and whistle, Star Now mainly advertises the most basic of jobs, such as
- Hair & Makeup.
- Stylist.
- Music.
- Dance.
- Magazine.
- Photography
- Film & stage crew jobs.
- Acting & Extras.
- Modeling.
- TV & reality jobs.
The bad side to starnow is that many of the jobs are either volunteer work or expenses included, the paid jobs are there but few. starnow is great for getting some work experience as the people who mainly post on this website are independent film makers but not great for finding paid work. I recommended this to people who are starting out and need to pad their resume.
Unlike ArtsHub, starnow only provides jobs nothing more and you have to pay for a subscription.
