Why Just Why: Mulan The Side Character

It has been recently announced by Disney that they are going to be making a live action Mulan film at first I was excited as Mulan is one of my favourite characters then on the blog Angry Asian, a script spec was recently released detailing a small part of the plot.

‘A white merchant’s business brings him to the heart of a legendary Asian conflict — he unwittingly helps save the day while winning the heart of the Asian female.’

That’s right they are reducing Mulan to a side character in her own movie, I am appalled by this Disney is basically saying by this is, Oh we’re keeping Mulan Chinese but we can’t let her be the hero of the story so we’ll just put her as a side character and make the lead a white man to save the day.

The 1998 animated film main focus was not the love story between her and Shang but of Mulan’s coming of age finding her place as she failed to fit into a mould that society tried to squeeze her into and instead chose her own path with her actions saving China because she found her own way of doing things.

Apparently there is 30 minutes dedicated to this European 30 year old traveler and only joins the Chinese Imperial Army because he is thinking with his little head way to reinforce that male stereotype along with protecting her in battles to defeating the main enemy of China, I am in amazement of how they are completely destroying a cherished story and reducing it to a mundane B-movie love story.

I am disappointed in the everyone who made this abomination of a script and I can only hope to my very core that the new writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver of Jurassic World understand what made Mulan great and put this injustice write.
